Shoestring Shopify T-Shirt Brand

Launching a Shopify t-shirt brand for about $230 using free app tiers and a $12.50-a-day weekend ad budget

Video published Aug 22, 2026 by Meg Heckman

Startup cost: About $30 in software plus $200 a month in ad testing (roughly $630 for a three-month attempt)

What It Is

You prepare a whole t-shirt brand before paying for anything: niche research and brand writing in free Claude, designs in free ChatGPT, cleanup in free Canva, all saved on Google Drive. Only then do you start Shopify's promotion ($1 a month for three months, then $39), buy a domain (about $15 a year), and connect free Printify for printing and shipping. She suggests paying $9.99 for one month of Hextom Bulk Product Edit to update 100 products in an afternoon, using Shopify's free swatches, and the free tiers of Loox for reviews and Klaviyo for email. Ads run Thursday to Sunday at $12.50 a day, about $200 a month, with the aim of reaching break-even before Shopify's full price starts.

The Pitch

The creator, whose brand she says did $4.98 million in the past 12 months, says she started as a nurse on a tight budget. She argues your budget is really money, time and effort, and that using free tools trades dollars for days: free ChatGPT may stretch 100 designs from a week or two to a month or more. She totals the cheapest version at about $230 to launch and test for a month and about $630 for a real three-month try.

Who It’s Best For

Budget-conscious beginners willing to trade extra hours for lower costs while building a work-at-home e-commerce brand.

The Truth (as we see it)

This is a refreshingly specific and honest breakdown: she rejects the '$0 to start' claim and shows exactly where free plans cost you time instead. Prices and promotions change, so check them yourself, and the $200 a month in ads is spent whether or not you make sales. Her revenue figure is her own and unverified. She recommends 'Build My POD', a Shopify setup tool built by her own team, and she repeatedly pushes her free 'Million Dollar Brand Blueprint', an email signup that funnels viewers toward her and her husband's paid WeScale course and community.
