Launching KDP Books With Social Traffic

Launching a new KDP book with outside social traffic instead of Amazon ads

Video published Sep 3, 2026 by Jonathan Nilsen

Startup cost: Very low startup cost (publishing is free; author copies for early TikTok Shop tests; ads optional later) (our estimate; the video doesn’t give figures)

What It Is

Launch a self-published book by building demand outside Amazon first. Pick a broad topic where leading books already earn $1,000 or more a day rather than a quiet low-competition niche; publish ebook, paperback, hardcover (and audiobook if it's ready) all at once; get a modest 10-20 early reviews; then post short videos on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Facebook Reels testing six angles (problem, outcome, identity, story, contrarian, emotion). Once a video visibly drives Amazon sales, add TikTok Shop (testing with author copies before buying stock in bulk), then TikTok ads and affiliate creators, and use Amazon ads last, only to add volume. The same sequence can relaunch an older book whose sales are fading.

The Pitch

He contrasts it with the traditional launch (low-competition keyword, ebook first, 50-100 reviews, Amazon ads at a loss to buy rank), which he calls renting visibility that fades when the ad spend stops. He says he has only five books, two doing most of the work, one earning over $100,000 in 2025 royalties, with $203,000 in the first five months of this year.

Who It’s Best For

A self-publisher, new or with an existing catalog, who would rather make short videos regularly than pay for Amazon ads.

The Truth (as we see it)

Publishing every format at once and relying on outside traffic instead of paid Amazon ads is a reasonable, lower-risk approach, and the six-angle testing is standard marketing practice. Two caveats: he mentions using a review service for early reviews, and Amazon prohibits paid or incentivized reviews, so check any such service against Amazon's rules first; and choosing a crowded, high-demand topic only works if your videos can actually win attention. The figures are his own, and the video promotes his paid coaching program.
