Industry-Specific AI Software
Domain-specific AI 'harness' software (industry tools, rules and memory wrapped around an AI model)
Video published Oct 6, 2026 by Greg Isenberg
Startup cost: Moderate startup cost (software build and AI usage costs) (our estimate; the video doesn’t give figures)
What It Is
You build software that wraps a general AI model in what it needs to do real work in one industry: tools it can use, workflow rules, memory and checks. The creator compares the model to a car's engine and the harness to everything else in the car. His example is an operating system for a freight brokerage agent; he cites legal tools such as Harvey and Spellbook as companies that grew this way. You earn through software subscriptions sold to businesses in that industry.
The Pitch
The creator says 'harnesses are the new GPT wrapper'. Most early wrappers failed, but he argues the best ones added industry tools and memory and became valuable businesses. He thinks there is a current gold rush here.
Who It’s Best For
Builders and technical founders, or industry experts working with one, who know a specific industry's workflows in detail.
The Truth (as we see it)
This is a software startup, not a quick side gig: it takes technical skill or a developer, plus selling to businesses. The legal-AI examples are heavily funded companies. The creator's own figure is that about 90% of startups fail, which is a fair warning. Deep knowledge of the target industry is the real edge. The video is a fast list of 13 business categories rather than a how-to, so there are no steps, prices or income figures to check, and the creator does not pitch a paid product of his own in this episode.
