What It Is

You create an independent profile on Contra, list the skills you want to be hired for (writing, virtual assistant tasks, online research, email and social media help, scheduling, video editing, graphics or web design) and add work samples. You then apply to projects businesses have posted or publish a fixed service clients can find and buy. When a client pays and the money becomes available in your Contra wallet, the creator says PayPal and Payoneer payouts can arrive in about 30 minutes, and eligible US debit card payouts in about an hour. If you have never had a client, the creator suggests making a few sample pieces yourself to fill the portfolio.

The Pitch

The creator says you don't need to be a technical expert: being organized, writing reasonably well or being good at finding things online is already a sellable service. His main reason for featuring Contra is speed of payment compared with waiting a week or two for a paycheck.

Who It’s Best For

Organized generalists and people with a specific skill (writing, editing, design, admin) who want one-off client projects they can do from home.

The Truth (as we see it)

Contra is a real freelance marketplace, and the gig itself, selling a skill to businesses project by project, is a standard and legitimate way to earn from home. The fast-payout claim only applies after the client's payment has cleared, which the creator himself points out, so the first payment can still take time. Like any freelance platform, the hard part is winning the first projects against more experienced freelancers; expect to send many applications before landing work. The creator says links to everything mentioned are in the description; some may be referral links, so weigh the platform choice on its own merits.
