AI Children's Picture Books
AI-written and AI-illustrated children's picture books on Amazon KDP
Video published Oct 30, 2026 by Joshua Mayo
Startup cost: Very low startup cost (AI subscriptions, free Canva and KDP accounts, a proof copy) (our estimate; the video doesn’t give figures)

What It Is
You research kids' book topics by typing phrases like "kids book about" into Amazon's search bar and noting the autocomplete suggestions, then check competing books' best-seller rank in a free sales calculator to estimate what a niche earns. Claude interviews you to build a "variable sheet" of book specs and generates concepts; ChatGPT then writes a page-by-page manuscript, a style guide and a master character reference image so the main character looks the same on every page. Each of the roughly 24 illustrated pages, with text included, is generated from that reference, then assembled in Canva with bleed margins, and a wraparound cover is built from Amazon's KDP cover template. The book is published as a premium-color paperback on Amazon KDP, which prints and ships each copy on demand and pays you a royalty.
The Pitch
The creator says parents buy picture books for the topic their child is obsessed with, not for the author, so an unknown author can sell. He points to estimator figures suggesting some simple kids' books earn $3,700-$5,800 a month, and says competition is a good sign because it proves demand. He recommends building a series around one character, since later books are faster to make and parents come back for more.
Who It’s Best For
Patient, detail-oriented people who enjoy children's stories and are willing to fuss over file sizes, cover templates and proof copies to get a clean print.
The Truth (as we see it)
KDP print-on-demand publishing is legitimate and requires no inventory, and the technical steps shown (bleed, cover templates, AI disclosure, ordering a proof) are accurate and useful. The sales figures come from third-party rank estimators, not real royalty statements, and the creator does not share his own two books' sales. Amazon is crowded with AI-generated children's books, premium color printing on short books leaves thin royalties, and AI-generated images generally cannot be copyrighted in the US, so a character can be copied. The creator sells an "AI Kids Book Complete Publishing Kit" with niche lists and prompts, which he promotes twice in the video.
